Alexis Sanchez has reportedly terminated his contract with Inter by mutual consent after weeks of negotiations and is now expected to sign for Olympique Marseille.

The 33-year-old Chile international was still under contract until June 2023, but not part of Simone Inzaghi’s plans and above all could not continue as the highest-paid player in the squad.

He was earning circa €7m per season after joining for free from Manchester United in September 2020, having before that been on loan for the 2019-20 campaign.

It was reported his agent had rejected €4m to tear up the deal a year early, so the agreement was reached for higher than that figure.

According to L’Equipe, the deal was struck at €4.5m.

Nonetheless, Calcio e Finanza point out that as long as it was under €6.5m, releasing the player a year early still gives Inter a profit.

Alexis Sanchez made 108 competitive appearances in the Inter jersey, scoring 20 goals and providing 23 assists.

He helped Inter to win one Serie A title, the Coppa Italia and the Italian Super Cup.

Inter already went through the same process this summer with Arturo Vidal, paying him severance to tear up the contract a year early.
