Roma forward Tammy Abraham said the addition of Paulo Dybala means the Giallorossi can make a challenge for the title.

It has been 21 years since they last won Serie A and, despite winning the Europa Conference League last season, they finished sixth in the league – 23 points behind winners Milan.

Asked whether he felt a title challenge was on the cards, Abraham told La Gazzetta dello Sport: “I would be lying if I said I didn’t want to win the Scudetto.

“We all want to win it but we need to show our value. We have a great team, a great club and a great manager. The sky is the limit.”

Roma have improved significantly this summer with Nemanja Matić and Paulo Dybala joining on a free among others, while there are also rumours Georginio Wijnaldum could be added.

Asked how it feels to play along Dybala, the England forward added: “I think it’s a privilege to have added a player that good to our team. It means a lot to the fans, who have received him very well.

“The messages appears clear to me: the club is creating a great project and the results are clear.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea could activate a buy-back clause in Abraham’s contract of €80 million.

Asked whether that is playing on his mind, he said: “I am only thinking about the present. I am focused on next season because I want it to be better than last season.”

Abraham joined Roma from Chelsea last season and enjoyed a positive debut campaign with 27 goals in all competitions – including the Europa Conference League semi-final winner over Leicester City.

  1. The issue with Roma is usually their performance vs top 6 teams, in which they seem to always find a way to somehow lose or drop points. Adding winners such as Matic, Dybala and Wijnaldum should give them some sorts of mental toughness, not to mention that the squad did taste European glory too last season. So, if they can sort that performance against title rivals, one would think that they’d be there or thereabout.

The future sure seems bright for Roma, at least on paper. The wild card here is Mourinho. He seldom stayed at the same club for more than 3 seasons, If Roma underwhelm this season, he would probably start to look for the way out,

As for Scudetto talk, personally I’d rate Juve and Inter as the main contender, followed closely by Milan (Milan would be rated on par once we got RW lol), and then Roma. They are indeed the dark horse this season IMHO.

  2. As a Roma fan, I feel quite certain that the Scudetto is still out of reach. However, with Matic, Dybala and Wijnaldum plus a good CB and then Belotti on a free to replace Shomurodov, a top four spot is a possibility, behind ACM, Inter and Juve. The best signing this year will probably turn out to be Spinazzola.

  3. Big fan of Dybala but I don’t think it’s a scudetto winning team. Good push for 4th place and could go far in Europe.

  4. I think we should be aiming for top 4 and not mentioning the Scudetto yet. Lets see where we are come the half way point of season, then we can maybe dream. Forza Roma.

  5. Roma are building nicely. If Mou can summon his inner bus parking nous and find that Chelsea and Inter mojo, they can aim for that in a few years. The target is top 4, stop selling their best players and try to add little by little. A blessing in disguise for Dybala as leaving Operation PhD Max, Road to Nowhere was the best thing for him. Roma have always played better football but lacked the resources to compete consistently.

  6. A strong performance from Roma is good for the league, but a scudetto run…not possible with this squad as it currently exists. They have some good pieces but not enough to overtake Inter, Milan, or Juventus. Still, they will be fun to watch!
