Former Italy striker Gianfranco Zola sends a brief message to his friend and ex-Chelsea teammate Gianluca Vialli: ‘We are all with you, fingers crossed.’

The former Juventus and Sampdoria striker is in hospital in London. He temporarily stepped down as Italy’s delegation chief last week to continue cancer treatment. He had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2017.

“We are all with him and we keep our fingers crossed,” Zola told La Repubblica in a brief message for his ex-teammate.

Zola and Vialli spent several years together at Stamford Bridge. Vialli joined the Blues in 1996 after winning the Champions League with Juventus. He scored 40 goals in 78 appearances with the Blues.

He became Chelsea’s player-manager in 1998, retiring a year later. The ex-striker remained in charge of the Blues until 2000.

Zola also joined Chelsea in 1996 from Parma and remained in London until 2003 when he moved to Cagliari for the final two years of his career. Magic Box is one of Vialli’s closest friends and scored 80 goals in 312 appearances at Stamford Bridge.
