There are growing concerns around Gianluca Vialli, as the Italy team manager is reportedly hospitalised after needing extra treatment for pancreatic cancer.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Vialli’s 87-year-old mother flew to London, where the former Chelsea striker has lived for several years.

The FIGC had announced only last week that Vialli was taking a temporary leave of absence from his role as Italy team manager in order to focus all his energy on treatment.

He was first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2017 and took over the role of team co-ordinator and manager with the Italy squad in November 2019.

Vialli was an instrumental figure in the Azzurri who won the EURO 2020 trophy at Wembley Stadium last summer.

It has been a tough few days for Mancini, Attilio Lombardo, Fausto Salsano and the other former Sampdoria players who won the Scudetto under Vujadin Boskov.

Sinisa Mihajlovic was in the same squad and succumbed to leukaemia on Friday, over three years after his first diagnosis.

The Serbian’s funeral was today, with Mancini and Lombardo among the pall-bearers.
