Nicolò Zaniolo has returned to Roma and will carry out tests on the injury he suffered during international duty with Italy.

The Giallorossi are hoping to have Zaniolo available immediately against Sassuolo, but the attacking midfielder returned bruised from his time with the Azzurri this month.

Zaniolo arrived at Trigoria to undergo tests on the injury in his right thigh, which forced him to sit out against Lithuania at the Mapei Stadium in Reggio-Emilia.

The attacker decided to continue physiotherapy with the national team and not leave the camp early.

The youngster had been missing since he suffered a second ACL rupture in September 2020 but was used as a striker by CT Roberto Mancini in the second half of the goalless stalemate against Switzerland.

Sky Sport Italia reports Roma are expected to give an update on Zaniolo’s situation in the next few hours and the possibilities of having the 22-year-old ready to play against the Neroverdi this weekend.

Meanwhile, the report claims Lorenzo Pellegrini’s tests have not revealed an injury and coach Jose Mourinho should have the captain at his disposal against Sassuolo.

  1. Yes. I read a physiotherapist talking about him and how his body and muscle type makes him prone to injuries. Something about the ratio of mass to muscle. He seems like an ox but sometimes guys like that have many more injuries than skinny guys or less muscular types. Too bad because he is so good but whenever I see him dart off on a run I wince. Another player like that was Matteo De Sciglio. With him I would say it is not how many games before he gets injured but how many sprints. He was good for about 7-8 all out sprints before pulling something.
