The Giallorossi are forced to do without injured Daniele De Rossi, Luca Pellegrini, Diego Perotti and Rick Karsdorp for the trip to the Stadio Franchi.

Cristante had been expected to step in, but it’s reported today that Italy Under-21 international Zaniolo is creeping up and ready to take the midfield reins instead alongside Steven Nzonzi.

It would be the 19-year-old's first Serie A start, though he did start against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Juan Jesus would allow Kostas Manolas a rest in defence, with Patrik Schick and Justin Kluivert again benched.

Javier Pastore is back in the squad, but only fit for a spot on the bench to begin with.

Fiorentina have practically a full squad to choose from and Coach Stefano Pioli is fully expected to return Simeone to the starting XI after he was dropped for poor form last week.

He’ll be flanked by Federico Chiesa and either Marko Pjaca or Kevin Mirallas, the former seeming more likely.

It’s a special game in midfield for Gerson, who is at Fiorentina on loan from Roma.

Probable line-ups

Fiorentina: Lafont; Milenkovic, Pezzella, Vitor Hugo, Biraghi; Benassi, Veretout, Gerson; Chiesa, Simeone, Pjaca

Roma: Olsen; Florenzi, Jesus, Fazio, Kolarov; Nzonzi, Cristante; Under, Lo Pellegrini, El Shaarawy; Dzeko
