The 20-year-old saw his season ended in January by a torn anterior cruciate ligament, although the COVID-19 pandemic then suspended Serie A and postponed Euro 2020 to next summer.

“Nicolò is recovering well, working at home with the aid of fitness coaches via videolink and everything is proceeding according to plan,” Igor Zaniolo told Radio Centro Suono Sport.

“Obviously, it would’ve been better to do this at the training ground, but Roma provided him with all the equipment he needs. It usually takes six months to fully recover from an ACL rupture, so I think he’ll be ready to play between July and August.”

There were reports this week that Roma had agreed a new contract with Zaniolo worth €2.5m plus bonuses per season, potentially doubling his current salary.

“Nicolò never asked for anything. He has a contract until 2024, is very happy at Roma and hopes to continue here as long as possible. If Roma wanted to increase his wages, we’d happily sit down to discuss it, but there’s nothing concrete right now.

“I imagine the club will want to lock him down further and make him feel an integral part of the Giallorossi project. Nicolò loves this jersey and loves Roma viscerally.”
