Nicolò Zaniolo has taken the risky decision to not use his carbon-fibre protective mask when starting for Roma against Atalanta today.

It kicks off at the Stadio Olimpico at 17.00 GMT.

The mask was designed especially for him after suffering micro-fractures to his nose during the 1-0 win over Spezia last week.

He has a black eye as part of the same injury, but after the warm-up, DAZN pitch-side reporters confirmed Zaniolo had decided it was not painful and he did not need to wear the mask.

It’s a risk, as any contact could create further damage or give him more pain.

It is also surprising, as only yesterday the man who created the mask revealed it weighed just 20 grams and Zaniolo didn’t even realise it was on his face.

Zaniolo also spoke to DAZN before kick-off and assured the reporters he was raring to go.

“Despite this knock to the nose, I am fine. We are all in good shape and want to bring home the three points.

“I prefer not to score a goal if the team wins anyway. I am focused only on giving 100 per cent and bringing in results, which are what we really need now.”
