Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini claims Davide Ballardini “committed career suicide, Beppe Iachini lost humility” and Giovanni Trapattoni turned him down.

The last few days have been absolute chaos in Sicily, as Zamparini tried to recall former tactician Iachini, then Ballardini was sacked after a huge row with captain Stefano Sorrentino.

“I didn’t fire Ballardini, he committed career suicide,” insisted Zamparini on Radio 24.

“I did not remove his legitimacy as Coach of the team, the results did that for him. I will also be remembered for firing two Coaches in one season after victories. Everyone has their own destiny.”

The third tactician of the campaign is Guillermo Barros Schelotto working alongside Iachini’s assistant manager Fabio Viviani.

“I did not recall Iachini because in my view he had lost humility after reaching a certain level and lost sight of perspective. Of course I care for Iachini like a son.”

Zamparini also discussed the fate of forward Franco Vazquez, who is wanted by Juventus, Milan and others.

“I will not sell Vazquez in January, we’ll see in June. It could well be that as he is an admirer of the new Coach, he’ll stay with us. He is worth €30m.

“We’re not going into Serie B, that is out of the question, because I think we have a good squad with five new arrivals in January, spending around €10m.”

Zamparini confirmed he almost handed over the reins of the club to an Italian football legend.

“I proposed he take over as President because I respect him, but he wants to continue working as a Coach and sees himself in other roles.

“Dino Zoff would be an option, as he is from Friuli like me and has just recovered from a serious illness. I know him well and in my view he’d be happy here.”
