Roma wing-back Nicola Zalewski was born and raised in Italy, but is representing Poland at the 2022 World Cup and thanks Jose Mourinho for his support and guidance.
The 20-year-old was born in Tivoli, on the outskirts of Rome, and worked his way up through the Giallorossi academy to become a firm fixture in the first team.
“Mourinho has given me a great deal. It has been more complicated recently, but I know that I have to train hard and this period will pass,” said Zalewski in his press conference.
More of a winger than a full-back, the 20-year-old has nonetheless proved himself to be a versatile player.
“In a 4-2-3-1 formation, I can play as a left-back or in a more advanced role. I do generally feel that the role of winger suits me better.”
He has made 16 appearances for the club this season between Serie A and the Europa League, which in turn earned him a place in the Poland squad for the World Cup in Qatar.
Zalewski could’ve represented Italy, but wanted to make his father’s dream come true, Christopher watching and weeping from the stands as the then teenager made his Poland debut against San Marino in September 2021.
Less than three weeks later, Christopher succumbed to a long illness, but he got to experience that moment.
Now his son will be participating in the World Cup for Poland.
“There is a little pressure, but that is normal. I am ready for the first game and I feel good.”
