Carlos Antonio Zago claims “Roma are stronger than Juventus,” but referees don’t favour the Bianconeri.

The ex-Roma defender retired in 2007 and is currently the assistant manager to Mircea Lucescu at Shakhtar Donetsk.

“I have always loved Serie A and continue to watch it from Ukraine,” the Brazilian told Calciomercato.com.

“Juventus-Roma was a complicated match. It was the fault of the referee, who awarded three dubious penalties.

“It should’ve ended there, but as this is Italy, there is always this fashion for stirring up trouble after the games and the echo of that controversy made it all the way to Ukraine.

“I don’t think Juventus have been helped much by referees in recent years. They were 10 or 15 years ago, but not now.

“It was an exciting game to the end. Roma and Juventus must fight for the Scudetto, as they are the best equipped to win. I hope there will be more such intense matches, albeit with less controversy.

“We’re only in Week 6, there are 32 to go, so I think Roma can win the Scudetto. They have great champions and are doing well, while enthusiasm could grow further if they get through the Champions League group phase.”

We’ve seen the two teams go head-to-head in Turin now, so who does Zago think is the stronger team?

“Roma are stronger than Juventus. They are giving consistency to what was done last season and with their summer signings I’d say they are superior.

“I hope the Giallorossi win the Scudetto.”

Zago also commented on Francesco Totti, who was a teammate and also worked as Zdenek Zeman’s assistant manager at Roma.

“When will he retire? I don’t know! He is the first to arrive for training and the last to leave. He wants to play and as long as he does well he should continue. When things start going a different way, it’s right for him to stop. He needs to end his career as a champion.”
