Alberto Zaccheroni has resigned as Coach of Japan, making him a candidate to replace Cesare Prandelli for Italy.
"I chose the tactical system for the team, so I take responsibility," he told reporters.
The decision had been in the air after the Blue Samurai were eliminated in the group phase of the World Cup.

Zac had taken Japan to great success, winning the Asian Cup in 2011 and ensuring they were the first nation to qualify for the 2014 tournament in Brazil.
However, they scraped just one point from three games and that was a 0-0 draw against 10-man Greece.
Zaccheroni tendered his resignation this evening as Coach of Japan.
He will be a free agent now and becomes one of the candidates to replace Prandelli on the Italy bench.
