The Belgium international already underwent a medical on deadline day after the clubs agreed a fee for €18m plus €3m bonuses, but Zenit pulled the plug when they failed to sign a replacement in time.

His contract will expire in June 2017 and Juve director Beppe Marotta confirmed today the move was “just delayed” rather than abandoned.

From January, Witsel will be able to negotiate terms with other clubs and become a free agent in July.

Izvestia in Russia today reported Zenit St Petersburg are working to formulate a new contract to keep hold of Witsel.

This would include a release clause, meaning he could still be sold for the right sum.

However, the same source notes Witsel has no intention of prolonging his Zenit career and has his heart set on Juve.
