Inter are said to be interested in Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who could be included in a swap deal for André Onana, but why does Beppe Marotta want to sign the Blues’ pair?

Chelsea and Inter directors reportedly met on Wednesday to discuss a potential swap deal for Onana, the Blues’ priority target in goal for 2023-24. Inter are not interested in Kepa and would get Chalobah or Loftus-Cheek instead.

The English defender would replace Milan Skriniar who has already signed a pre-contract agreement with PSG, where he’ll move on a free transfer at the end of his contract in June. Stefan de Vrij, Danilo D’Ambrosio’s deals also expire at the end of the season, but a contract extension is on the cards for both, while the Nerazzurri must sit down with Lazio to make Francesco Acerbi’s move permanent.

The Nerazzurri are also preparing for a reshuffle in midfield, with Roberto Gagliardini leaving as a free agent in June. The Italian has been complaining about his lack of playing time and will not extend his contract at the Stadio Meazza.

However, several Inter midfielders have attracted interest from European giants, especially Marcelo Brozovic and Nicolò Barella. The Italian has been linked with a move to Liverpool and last week even the Reds’ legend Jamie Carragher discussed a potential transfer to Anfield for the 26-year-old.

Despite their financial struggles, Inter don’t want to part ways with the Italy international who has a contract expiring in 2026, but with Gagliardini leaving, potentially alongside Brozovic, Loftus-Cheek would bolster the Nerazzurri’s options in the middle of the park in 2023-24.
