Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali is set to be handed his ban in the Serie A betting scandal imminently as all parties push to finalise proceedings.

Page 13 of today’s Gazzetta dello Sport details how the 23-year-old Italian will be handed a lengthy ban for betting on various football matches, including Milan and Brescia games during his time at both clubs.

On Monday, Tonali’s lawyers met with FIGC prosecutor Giuseppe Chine to try and reach a final agreement on the midfielder’s plea bargain. He could be sidelined for 10 months, ending his season already.

His representatives are pushing for a similar deal as the one given to Juventus’ Nicolo Fagioli, who was banned for seven months and will be forced to carry out various ‘rehabilitation and social services with awareness campaigns’.

Tonali’s legal team presented a certified medical and psychiatric report to the FIGC, detailing the extent of the 23-year-old’s gambling addiction. UEFA are keeping a close eye on the situation, hoping that a ruling will be made by the Italian FA as early as this evening.

The goal is to inform Newcastle of the extent of Tonali’s ban before the start of their Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday evening.

This may be difficult to achieve, however, as Chine is talking to the Turin Public Prosecutor’s Office to discuss the midfielder’s mobile phone analysis, wanting to see if the full picture has been adequately established.
