Fiorentina legend Gabriel Omar Batistuta is the Argentinean player with the most goals at the World Cup and hopes Leo Messi will overtake him in Qatar.

Argentina make their World Cup debut against Saudi Arabia at 10 am GMT and all the eyes are on the PSG star who will play in the competition for the last time.

Messi has scored six goals at the World Cup in his career, four fewer than Fiorentina legend Batistuta, the best Argentinean World Cup scorer with 10 goals.

“I hope Messi can overtake me, it’s ridiculous to think that he has no trust. He has scored goals everywhere,” the ex-Viola striker told Olé.

“Don’t believe that he feels the weight of Argentina’s shirt. The problem is that Argentina didn’t offer him the right guarantees. I played with great footballers and I’d loved to do the same with Messi.”

Batistuta, one of the most iconic strikers of all time, scored 205 goals in 333 appearances with Fiorentina between 1991 and 2000. However, he won his only Serie A title with Roma in 2000-01, scoring 33 goals in 87 matches with the Giallorossi.

He also spent six months at Inter, bagging just two goals in 12 appearances. He played at the World cup in 1994, 1998 and 2002, scoring 10 goals in 12 matches, an average of 0.83 per game.
