DAZN have released VAR files from Christian Pulisic’s controversial winner in Genoa–Milan, revealing officials said the USMNT international hadn’t controlled the ball with his arm.
Pulisic scored a last-minute winner against Genoa on October 7, just before the international break. It was controversial as the American winger appeared to have controlled the ball with his arm, but his goal stood following a lengthy VAR check.
DAZN have now released video and audio files from VAR officials during the game. Here’s the translation of what was said during the check.
Referee: ‘See how he controlled it. It seems all good to me.’
VAR: ‘OK, now we see. I have to see if he stopped it with his arm, OK?
Referee: ‘OK.’
VAR: ‘He touches it with the armpit.’
VAR 2: ‘I’ll try the reverse angle.’
VAR officials continue watching the replay from many different angles. At some point, it seemed Pulisic had effectively touched the ball with his arm, so a VAR official asked: ‘Is it a handball?’
They continued watching replays from more different angles, but in the end, the VAR official agreed Pulisic hadn’t controlled the ball with his arm.
‘No, no,’ said the VAR official. ‘It’s not handball.”
He called the referee and said: ‘Check completed, the goal is valid, we watched all replays.’
