Olivier Giroud’s acrobatic volley for Milan to beat Spezia brought back some not so good memories for Stefano Pioli, who said it immediately reminded him of a strike Francesco Totti scored for Roma against his Lazio.
The France international flew at the back post to acrobatically meet a Sandro Tonali cross and fire in from close range to win it 2-1 at San Siro this evening.
The goal was compared to one scored by Erling Braut Haaland for Manchester City this season, but the Serie A moment it brought to mind was back in the 2014-15 season.
Pioli’s Lazio were 2-0 up in the Derby della Capitale when Totti completed a brace with a similar leap at the far post to volley in.
Totti no doubt
Totti no doubt but still giroud goal is amazing
Don’t even have to see Girouds, its always Totti.
OK I watched it, great goal from Giroud, very well taken
Love totti but giroud’s goal was better. Lets be honest.
If You play football You know what goal is more difficult to score.
I am a Roma fan, but both goals are great. Can’t choose one.
Yes, if you play football and understand the game, you definitely recognise Totti’s go is better as the angle is tighter. He literally had to leap in the air while the ball was still 10m away from him. Giroud’s goal was okay but is nowhere near Totti’s.
Can no1 see that totti was unmarked and Giroud had some1 on him…forget the tight angle
@ Gaz
Girouds goal was ok”
Woke up to reading this. Thanks for the amusement
Van Basten’s was better than both.
@El Sid
Well, if we’re talking Totti’s goal against Sampdoria, No one could beat that. Tight angle, first time shot with left foot (weaker foot).
Even Sampdoria fans applauds him
As a Milan fan yeah Totti is harder and especially in the derby
@Des,
I don’t think so. Not saying Totti’s volley wasn’t good, it was, but given the occasion and magnitude, Van Basten’s volley is one of the best goals ever scored, period, up there with Maradona’s solo goal in 86.
If you truly know football, you would know that balls coming from behind are way harder to hit than ones from the side.
C’mon guys, both awesome goals… but points well taken: Giroud’s ball came from behind AND he had two guys on him. Beautiful.
@franco
AND Totti didn’t have two guys on him?
How about the distance between the two pas(s)es?
Both goals are practically identical, only one scored FOR Pioli from the left, while the other scored AGAINST Pioli from the right.
The real difference is: One scored against struggling minnows and then got a red card for celebrating.
While the other scored in the DERBY against greatest rivals, then created one of the most iconic celebration EVER!
(To be fair: Oliver did score a WINNER in the last minutes of the game. That should mean something.)
Totti’s goal = 10
Giroud’s goal = 10
