Thomas Vermaelen “can’t wait” to play with Francesco Totti and says Radja Nainggolan “raved about” Roma.

The centre-back has officially joined the Giallorossi from Barcelona, on a free loan with the option to buy next summer.

“I’m very happy, it’s a new beginning for me and I can’t wait to get started,” Vermaelen told Roma TV.

“I know Radja well, he’s friendly and he’s helping me a lot. I know [Wojchiech] Szczesny as well, and they’re both helping me to acclimatise.

“They’ve raved about the club to me, and they’ve only had words of praise.

“Totti? Everyone knows him, it’s not often that a player spends his entire career with one club. I can’t wait to play with him.

“As for Edin Dzeko, I know him well, it’s hard to play against him. He’s good with his head and his feet and he’s difficult to deal with as a defender.

“I’m confident about qualifying for the group stage of the Champions League, we have a good chance.”

Vermaelen was also asked which of his Barça teammates he had been most impressed by.

“All the forwards are incredible, but if I had to say one then I’d say [Lionel] Messi. He does in training what he does in the game, it’s a spectacle.”
