“With a small squad, and with a lot of injuries earlier in the season, we’ve played 50 games,” Ventura said after the match, referencing his side’s Europa League campaign.

“We’re not used to that. The team is a bit tired, and tonight, against a team which is in better condition than us, we got to 1-1, tried to win it, went 2-1 down and then didn’t have the strength to react.

“I’m sorry about the last five minutes, we stopped playing at they got three goals which make the result more emphatic.

“We’ve worked very hard to build a team which plays until the end, and I congratulate my team for what they did for 80 minutes.

“I don’t think the last five minutes should affect the image of what we’ve built over the past few years.”
