Giampiero Ventura points out he inherited an ageing Italy side, insisting “it’s not only results on the pitch that count”.

The CT has come in for much criticism since his Azzurri lost 3-0 to Spain in the World Cup qualifier, and he defended his record while speaking at Università del Foro Italico.

“We lost to Spain, but the Under-21s lost too and Juventus in Barcelona, as well as Roma, suffered a lot,” Ventura noted.

“If we were going through a happier time on an individual level we’d have fewer problems. We had a national team which was advanced in age, we want to leave it more competitive.

“It’s not only results on the pitch which count. We’ve made clubs understand the motivations and benefits of the training camps.”

The Coach also spoke to Premium Sport outside the University, offering brief comment on the criticism he’s received.

“Is the criticism exaggerated? Make your own assessments.

“I’m happy for [Davide] Zappacosta, he scored a great goal [for Chelsea last night].”
