VAR was at the centre of controversy when it broke down during Salernitana’s Serie A match against Torino, causing a long delay to the start of the second half.

The scoreline had Torino leading at the Stadio Arechi through an Antonio Sanabria diving header, but there was confusion in the stadium when the two teams didn’t come back out for the restart.

The referee eventually appeared with the squads and spoke to the two coaches on the touchline, as technicians struggled to get the pitch-side monitor working.

Without that, there was no way for the referee to have any on-field reviews, as the signal comes from the central VAR hub near Milan.

Eventually, after a good 25 minutes of half-time break, the two coaches and referee decided to start the second half without the use of a Video Assistant Referee.

It only lasted a few minutes before technicians managed to fix the monitor and get things back to normal.
