Borja Valero admits Fiorentina “are not the best team” in Serie A but “we play the most beautiful football in Italy”.

The Viola are currently second, one point behind leaders Inter, and have been dipped by many as Scudetto dark horses.

“Fiorentina play good football, and have helped me since day one,” Valero told ABC, when asked about life in Florence.

“The city is beautiful too. It’s small, nice, comfortable and culturally fascinating. It rains a bit too much, but the rest is fabulous!

“I feel very loved, since I came here I’ve been given the nickname ‘Sindaco’ [mayor]. It’s funny and nice. My family and I are very happy.

“The fans are very passionate in Florence. It’s a long time since we’ve been in this situation, but we have to stay calm.

“Our goal isn’t the Scudetto. We play the best football in Italy, but we’re not the best team. Of course, we don’t fear anyone.

“The Pope came to Florence, and the people asked him for the Scudetto before health! They’ve gone 46 years without winning it.

“If we succeed in winning it, most Fiorentinos could die happy that day.”

Valero was also asked to explain Juventus’ poor start to the season.

“They’re missing their quarterback, Pirlo. He was the Tom Brady of calcio. Aside from how good he was, I was fascinated by his long passing.

“The worst thing about Italian football? The state of the pitches, they’re usually very dry.”
