Udinese have confirmed that they will sign a new midfielder during the January transfer window – but it won’t be Angelo Palombo of Sampdoria.

“A midfielder will almost certainly arrive,” owner Gino Pozzo told the Gazzetta dello Sport on Monday. “We’ll do nothing else in any other department though.”

Pozzo’s words understandably fuelled reports that Sampdoria captain Palombo, currently in Serie B, could be targeted.

The Italian international’s future is in doubt after some problems at Marassi this term, as well as renewed transfer interest in him from other clubs.

“The Palombo road is one that we can’t go down,” Udinese sporting director Fabrizio Larini stated this afternoon.

“He decided to stay in Genoa over the summer and I don’t expect him to take a backwards step – at least not during this season.

“Even if he is made available for transfer, it seems to me that clubs such as Fiorentina and Juventus are already on him.”

The Stadio Friuli Bianconeri, currently joint second in Serie A, are expected to temporarily lose a few players after Christmas to the African Cup of Nations.
