Udinese have confirmed they’ve been ordered to go into quarantine after the number of players testing positive for COVID-19 rose to nine, so they won’t be able to play against Fiorentina or Atalanta.

The games were meant to kick off tomorrow and on Sunday with the return of the Serie A fixtures for 2022.

However, Udinese abruptly cancelled their flight to Florence this afternoon.

The club then released a statement confirming the local health authority (ASL) had ordered the entire squad into quarantine from January 5 to 9.

The decision was made because another two players tested positive today, following the seven and two members of staff who had already been infected earlier this week.

Udinese therefore formally requested the opportunity to postpone their upcoming matches against Fiorentina and Atalanta.

It is a slightly awkward situation, because Udinese had tried to go ahead and play on December 22 when Salernitana were given a similar travel ban by their ASL.

The Lega Serie A refused to postpone the match and could well take the same approach here.

As things stand, there are at least three matches that won’t be played in Serie A tomorrow, because Salernitana were placed into quarantine and cannot travel to Venezia, while Torino have been ordered not to travel to Bergamo against Atalanta.
