There were ugly scenes before, during and after the Conference League game between FC Twente and Fiorentina fans, with the locals repeatedly throwing objects and using fireworks to disturb the players.

The Viola won the first leg 2-1 at the Stadio Artemio Franchi and held out for a 0-0 draw in Enschede, qualifying for the Europa Conference League group stage.

However, the match was overshadowed by constant crowd trouble and much of it was down to the local supporters.

There were clashes between sets of fans and police in the streets of the city on Wednesday night, with 26 Fiorentina supporters reported to be arrested and detained.

At circa 4.30am last night, locals set off fireworks right outside the hotel where Fiorentina were staying in a bid to disturb their sleep ahead of the big game.

During the fixture, the referee had to stop play twice because fans were throwing objects including plastic bottles and glasses full of water and beer.

Every time Fiorentina took a corner they were pelted with plastic items, and at one stage in the final minutes play was halted because the Viola bench was inundated with objects thrown from the stands.

According to Fiorentinanews.com, the trouble continued after the match too, but fortunately this time there was a gate separating the two sets of supporters, who nonetheless still managed to hurl things at each other.
