Turin mayor Chiara Appendino is to stand trial in February for manslaughter following the fan tragedy before the Champions League Final two years ago.
Fans had congregated in Piazza San Carlo to watch the Champions League Final between Juventus and Real Madrid on a maxi-screen positioned at the top of the piazza on June 3, 2017.
A stampede ensued midway through the second half, when fans believed there was a bomb in the square, and began to panic. The crush resulted in an estimated 1,500 people injured and two deaths.

La Repubblica reports Appendino, alongside Paolo Giordana, the mayor’s ex-chief of staff, and Maurizio Montagnese, head of the Turin tourism board, will too stand trial for the deaths of Erika Pioletti and Marisa Amato.
Pioletti died less than two weeks later due to her injuries, whilst Amato only passed away in January, having become a tetraplegic.
Four men have already been convicted of instigating the panic for the sole purpose of robbery and were handed 10-year sentences in May.
