The legendary coach has picked up seven Scudetti during his illustrious coaching career and helped Juventus lift the European Cup in 1984-85, and the coach with a history at Milan, Inter, Cagliari and Fiorentina pointed out that football plays an important role to help ‘unite young people all over the world’.

“I miss football, it saddens me to be without it because sport is life and joy,” Trapattoni told La Repubblica. “Not even the World Wars stopped it completely and this makes us reflect on the seriousness of the problem.

“Football is the simplest and most powerful tool to unite young people from all over the world. It goes beyond all borders and ideologies. It even goes beyond politics. I think we will need it to start again and we hope for a better way too.”

Trappatoni, who has turned 81, reveals he still dreams of playing himself and turning up for training sessions.

“I still dream of playing football and training. I had a happy life, I thank God for this, and I really don’t ask for anything else,” he added. “I have no regrets, except for friends who are gone. After 80, it’s like entering extra time.

“This has become my game and the best game I can play without ever giving up."
