He retired last summer at the age of 40 and made no secret of his clashes with then-Coach Spalletti, resulting in fans turning on the tactician.

“There has never been a clarification with Spalletti and there never will be. I’d have preferred to close my career in a different way.

“If I were him, I’d have dealt with the player, and above all the person, in a different way. I’d have talked to him and confronted our ideas.

“In any case, I’ve been able to make this step from player to Roma director and I did it with the right spirit: that of harmony, intelligence and maturity. I grew up on that pitch and I’ll die on it too.

“I don’t think there is another Totti who could stay this long at Roma. Football is more of a business now and it’s tough for young players to remain in one club for a lifetime, like me or Daniele De Rossi. It’s impossible to see that again.

“Besides, before there was more of a focus on the promising Italian youngsters rather than discovering the next Brazilian, Argentinean or South American talent.”

Roma President Pallotta has been criticised by fans for selling off their best players and Totti voices their concerns.

“If it was up to me, I’d spend any sum to get the best players in the world, because you need strong players to win trophies. I have always said that and I won’t change my mind.

“However, I am not the one who controls the money, it’s the President who decides. The President sets the budget and based on that budget we’ll have to construct a team.”
