Francesco Totti describes his special relationship with Roma: 'I'm not an icon, just a Roman citizen in love with this place'.

The Number 10 will soon celebrate his 40th birthday, reaching a nice round number in one of the longest careers enjoyed by a Serie A superstar at the top levels of the game.

“For us Romans in particular, there’s an especially strong bond with the city and our colors,” Totti told SI.com. “I wouldn’t call myself an icon, but a citizen of Rome who’s eternally in love with his city.

“If I'd left, I'd probably have more winners' medals to my name now and I'd certainly have been involved in more Champions League semifinals and finals.

“But I feel a huge sense of pride at having worn the Roma jersey for so many years and knowing I've given my all for the club. Daniele [De Rossi] and I won the World Cup with Italy as Roma players and we've won a few other trophies here. And who's to know there's not be more to come yet.

“I wouldn’t call winning trophies an 'obligation' and I don't think Daniele [De Rossi] sees it that way either. I see it more as a mission that we've both taken on with passion and a sense of responsibility.”

In spite of his fondness for the city, the 39-year-old has precious few opportunities to visit it in peace.

“I’ve always said it would have been nice to be able to take a stroll through the city center and not be recognized. But the last time I tried that it was pandemonium. In any case, I don't feel oppressed by my city. I'm just in love with its streets, monuments and neighborhoods.”
