Rumours suggest Francesco Totti never offered to 'play for free' for Roma as previously reported, nor was rejected.

The report spread this morning that the Giallorossi icon offered to play without payment, but was turned down by his club anyway.

The story originates from ReteSport journalist Daniele Lo Monaco, and was picked up by most Italian media.

Now, however, Il Tempo journalist Alessandro Austini claims the story is false.

The story originates from ReteSport journalist Daniele Lo Monaco, and was picked up by most Italian media.

Now, however, Il Tempo journalist Alessandro Austini claims the story is false.

“Totti told his friends that he would play for free, but he never said as much to [President James] Pallotta,” reads Austini's Twitter profile. “So I don't see how he could have been turned down.”

There is the possibility that the original story was an April's Fool, even though it has already been corroborated by a major source like La Repubblica.
