The Tuscan side’s sporting director confirmed today that the centre-back will be among those sold, but the 26-year-old would stay if his club didn’t need the money.

“We’ll have to see if I go away, but even if I do I’m sure I’ll come back to wear the Empoli shirt one day,” Tonelli told Il Tirreno.

“It’s a certainty. This is my home, I’ve been here for 16 years and I’d never leave if I could do that.

“I’m a professional though, and a player’s career is not long. I have a duty to think about the future too.

“If I leave, in short, it will only be for the money made from the sale. The economic aspect perhaps means I’ll go somewhere else, but I repeat: if I could I’d stay here forever.”
