Empoli sporting director Marcello Carli confirms Mario Rui, Lorenzo Tonelli and Riccardo Saponara will all leave this summer.

The Tuscan side have had two remarkable seasons in Serie A since winning promotion, achieving safety with one of the smallest budgets in the League.

“Unfortunately we’ll have to let go of four or five players,’ Carli admitted on Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.

“We’ve taken a point more than last year, despite Maurizio [Sarri] leaving [for Napoli] so that’s very satisfying. We definitely have players who will go to big clubs.

“Tonelli, Saponara and Mario Rui? Yes, all three will leave. For them their time here is done. I don’t know how much enthusiasm there’d be if they remained, this year we played with a lot of motivation, but their journey at Empoli is over.

“We also have ideas to replace them.”

Tonelli has been linked with the likes of Napoli, Roma and Lazio but Carli is unsure where the defender will end up.

“I don’t know, there was a lot of interest in Lorenzo in January, including important offers from Napoli and Roma.

“I haven’t heard from Napoli, but they move very quickly. I remember how quickly they closed the deal for [Mirko] Valdifiori.”
