Sandro Tonali’s agent Beppe Riso claims the Italian midfielder is ‘shocked’ and ‘fighting a disease’ but could play against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Riso spoke to Sky Sport Italia after an event at the Italian embassy in London ahead of tonight’s Euro 2024 qualifying fixture between Italy and England at Wembley.

It is the first time Riso publicly speaks about his client’s involvement in a betting scandal in Italy.

“He is a little shocked by the situation but has already started fighting. He has always fought,” said Riso.

“This is the most important game against a disease. He has accustomed us to great games and he usually wins. I hope Sandro’s experience will save the life of other guys. Praise to Newcastle who have always been close to the player who is shocked and sad,” continued the player’s representative.

Tonali was interrogated by Italian Police at Coverciano last week when he was formally put under investigation. He left Italy’s training centre the following day alongside his compatriot Nicolò Zaniolo who is also under investigation.

Tonali has returned to Newcastle and is working with his teammates.

“Sandro is training and could even play on Saturday,” said Riso.

“He has understood he must face this problem with determination and the club is supporting him right now.”

Tonali is reportedly willing to ‘collaborate’ with the Turin Prosecutor and the FIGC and has already sought help from a therapist to treat his gambling addiction, several Italian sources claim.

The Italian midfielder joined Newcastle from Milan last summer for a reported fee of €80m including add-ons.
