Sandro Tonali insists tonight’s win away to Verona was not too different to last season’s at the Bentegodi, but had not realised he was about to be substituted before scoring the Milan goal.

The Rossoneri had a particularly tough match at the Stadio Bentegodi, as the Miguel Veloso own goal from Rafael Leao’s pull-back was immediately cancelled out by Koray Gunter with a big Matteo Gabbia deflection.

Roberto Piccoli thumped the crossbar and Malick Thiaw made two last-ditch blocks, but Tonali proved decisive once again in Verona, just as he scored a brace here in the 3-1 victory last season.

The midfielder must really enjoy this stadium, as he has scored three of his total seven Serie A goals in this fixture.

“It’s an important result, we already know from last season what it means to win here. We wanted to do well on our travels yet again, as we are unbeaten in 2022, so we are happy that even in our off nights, we are still able to get the win,” Tonali told DAZN.

“In May it was slightly different, as we were in the rush towards the Scudetto. I think the importance of tonight’s victory is not that far from last season’s, because it is important for us and to keep our morale up.”

Mere moments before finding the back of the net, Tonali was about to get replaced by Junior Messias, a plan that obviously changed.

“I hadn’t realised, maybe it was better that I didn’t. We are happy for our fans, as so many come to the away games and give us a big hand with their support.”
