Milan star Sandro Tonali hopes the Rossoneri will reach an agreement to extend with Ismael Bennacer and discusses Stefano Pioli’s importance in his development.

The Serie A giants face RB Salzburg in a key Champions League clash tonight and need a win or a draw to qualify for the Round of 16 for the first time since 2013.

“We have more experience in Europe, and we are more mature. This can make the difference in Europe, as we’ve already shown this season,” the Italy international told Prime Video ahead of tonight’s match.

The former Brescia ace is expected to start in the middle of the park with Ismael Bennacer. The Algeria international sees his contract expire in June 2024 and hasn’t yet reached an agreement to extend his stay at San Siro.

“Isma is a reference point for all of his, we often look for him because he can dictate the tempo,” said Tonali.

“I hope they can reach an agreement because he feels well here and we are on good terms with him.”

The 22-year-old is glad Pioli has recently signed a contract extension with the Rossoneri until 2025.

“We congratulated him this morning, it’s important to know that he is not under question. To have such a reference point in the dugout is crucial for every player,” he said.

“He was important to me because I’ve developed thanks to him and I am grateful to him.”

When asked whether the Rossoneri can win the Champions League this season, he replied: “It all depends on us, we have to play every game to win and this will lead us to great results.”

Tonali has one goal and three assists in 15 appearances at a club level this season.
