Roma director Tiago Pinto joined Jose Mourinho in refusing to confirm or deny the tactician’s rant calling his players mentally weak. ‘What happened in the locker room stays between us.’

The Giallorossi had a tense week leading up to this trip to Sassuolo, which kicked off at 17.00 GMT.

They were held 0-0 by Genoa with a last-gasp disallowed Nicolò Zaniolo goal, then crashed out of the Coppa Italia with a 2-0 defeat to Inter.

It was after that match that Mourinho reportedly ranted at his players, something the coach refused to deny, insisting only it was ‘a lie’ that the squad was offended.

“What happens in the locker room stays there,” added general manager Tiago Pinto on DAZN this evening.

“Mourinho and I are fully aligned on all our strategies. What happened remains between us.”

The arrival of the Special One was meant to take Roma up to the next level, but they are falling far behind the race for the top four and are five points worse off than last season.

“This comparison between seasons is not very helpful, we can only evaluate and understand the evolution of the team more at the end.”
