Director Tiago Pinto warns they need ‘time’ to develop the squad, but he is more than ever convinced that ‘Jose Mourinho will become one of the most important coaches in the history of Roma.’

The Portuguese transfer chief spoke to Sky Sport Italia and was asked if the club and squad were on track with their plans after the arrival of Mourinho.

“When we started this project, we all knew that it would take time, Mourinho even said as much during the opening press conference,” said Tiago Pinto.

“We are not using it as an excuse for bad results, but because we really do need time. The owners inherited a difficult financial situation at the club, with needs that as you know they continue to support constantly, and we on the sporting side also inherited a situation that needed time to change.

“I am referring to the squad, the mentality, the whole sporting structure around the team, which in my view is very important to get Roma closer to success.

“I cannot say we are satisfied, because we know that we have to do better and the results over the last month have been bad, but I am confident the work we are doing and Mourinho’s leadership will bring results in future.

“This certainly is not the right time to be doubting the project, the strategy or Mourinho’s leadership.”

Tiago Pinto explained that Mourinho is changing the mentality of the Giallorossi squad, from scouting to match analysis and operations.

However, he also warned not to expect developments too quickly, including the January transfer window, as financial restrictions remain.

“It would not have been possible to sign a coach like Mourinho if we hadn’t been aligned in terms of strategy. We know that we cannot create an instant team like others might do, but Mourinho is not just aware of that, he is perfectly aligned to this approach.

“We never doubted our strategy. Perhaps we confused people over the summer because Tammy Abraham is young, but also a great player. We want to improve in every transfer window.

“I have to say that four months on, I am certain this was the right choice and I am certain that Mourinho will become one of the most important coaches in the history of Roma.”
