The Italy Under-21 side completed a comeback to beat Romania 4-2 in this evening’s friendly, with Simone Canestrelli scoring an own goal followed by a hat-trick.

The match was hosted by the Stadio Benito Stirpe in Frosinone and got off to a rough start when Canestrelli accidentally turned into his own net trying to intercept a cross from the right.

Romania went 2-0 up thanks to Racovitan, who was allowed a free header on a corner.

However, Simone Mulattieri – owned by Inter and on loan at Crotone – pulled one back moments later with a strong run and angled drive.

There were multiple changes at the break and a completely different Italy dominated.

Crotone defender Canestrelli made up for the own goal by bagging a hat-trick, nodding in a cross from Genoa’s Andrea Cambiaso, then making the most of two assists by Milan-owned Lorenzo Colombo.

Canestrelli is on loan at Crotone, but owned by Empoli.
