Massimiliano Allegri highlighted Paul Pogba’s initial decision not to undergo surgery back in September following his meniscus injury when discussing his absence to the media today.
During his press conference ahead of Juventus’ Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain, Allegri commented on the Pogba situation and drew attention to the delayed operation, saying: “Once the decision was made not to have surgery at the start of the season, it was normal that hopes that he could return with Juventus and France were slim.”
Pogba suffered the meniscus injury during a training session in Las Vegas during the pre-season tour. He initially opted for a conservative recovery plan, not wanting to undergo an operation and potentially miss the World Cup. Juventus suggested that he undergo the surgery and after an unsuccessful test on the pitch in early September, he finally agreed.
The Old Lady hoped that the French midfielder would only be out for around eight weeks, but it became clear yesterday that he would be out of action until 2023, ruling him out of the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.
Had Pogba immediately carried out the operation in late July, he’d have had around five to six weeks more time to recover, but his initial hesitance ultimately cost him, although the Frenchman was still unlucky regardless.
The 29-year-old will now have to wait until the new year to make his second debut for Juventus, when he hopes to put this tough start to the season behind him.
