Andriy Shevchenko hopes to get a negative swab test today to be on the sidelines against Milan tonight, although it could be his last match in charge of Genoa.

The Grifonea visit Milan in a Coppa Italia Round of 16 tie tonight.

It kicks off at 20.00 UK time.

On paper, it would be Sheva’s first game as a coach against the Rossoneri at San Siro.

He already met Stefano Pioli’s side in a Serie A clash at Marassi on December 1, losing 3-0.

However, the former striker may not be able to attend the match against his former club as he tested positive for COVID last week.

The Milan legend will have a new swab test today and will be given the green light to be in the dug-out against the Rossoneri if it comes back negative.

Ironically, tonight’s match with Milan could be his last one in charge of Genoa.

The former Milan and Chelsea striker has only collected three points in nine games at Marassi and according to multiple reports in Italy, the Rossoblu have already decided to sack him.

Calciomercato.com and La Gazzetta dello Sport report Bruno Labbadia is the leading candidate to take over at the club once Shevchenko is sacked.

Labbadia could make his debut in charge of Genoa on Monday night against Fiorentina.

Shevchenko replaced Davide Ballardini in November, so Labbadia would be Genoa’s third coach this season.

If Shevchenko doesn’t recover from COVID, his assistant Mauro Tassotti, a former Milan defender and assistant coach, will be on the sidelines against the Rossoneri.

2 thought on “The curious case of Shevchenko: his fate seems sealed ahead of Milan reunion”
  1. That’s just brutal for him to end his short stint against his favorite club. Wishing him the best for the future.

  2. Typical Genoa. I think they average 3 coaches per season. Sad to see such a historical club in that state and on the way to demotion. Hopefully the new ownership can change this in time.
