According to Il Corriere Dello Sport, Roma boss José Mourinho is the leading candidate to replace Fernando Santos as Portugal’s coach.

The Specia One is contracted at the Stadio Olimpico until June 2024, but according to the Rome-based paper he’s been pressured by several ‘influential personalities’ in his home country to replace Santos who stepped down after Portugal’s elimination in the World Cup quarter-finals.

Talks between Mourinho and the Portuguese federation have not begun yet, but the Special One is considering his options which include managing both club and country until the end of his contract with Roma.

On the other hand, the Portuguese federation could appoint an interim coach waiting for Mourinho to take a decision on his future.

According to the report, the ex-Inter coach is the leading candidate for the job. He is tempted to get the role, but at the same time, he doesn’t want to leave Roma.

The Special One will be back in Portugal today to continue preparation for the second part of the campaign with the Giallorossi.

He won’t hold a press conference to avoid questions about his future from local media.
