Mauro Tassotti believes Milan are back on the right track, as before “there were too many people coming from Inter”.

The Rossoneri have been taken over by Elliott Management following Yonghong Li’s ousting, and the former right-back sees a brighter future for his beloved club.

“Milan is back to being a normal club,” Tassotti told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Recognisable faces have returned, the club has returned to having big financial possibilities which rely on important figures.

“Recognisable faces have returned, the club has returned to having big financial possibilities which rely on important figures.

“That’s why I say I like this kind of Rossoneri reunion. I'll be honest: now I follow Milan with more affection than before.

“Leonardo and Paolo [Maldini] have the intelligence to be a successful pair and they have the aura of champions, I'm very happy for them.

“We’re talking about people who are respected everywhere, not just in the Milan world. As for [Coach Gennaro] Gattuso, we can’t forget what he did last season.

“It was right to give him the opportunity to start this season, he managed to give the squad a precise identity. Milan were always a team, even on difficult days.

“Maldini? Thanks to his experience he has an overall football competence, then it’s obvious that if there’s a transfer negotiation he’ll be the first to realise he needs to learn this subject.

“It was a crime that Paolo wasn’t involved at Milan, I find it absurd that he didn’t come back earlier but evidently he wasn’t convinced by the previous project.

“I don’t blame him, there was a President [Yonghong Li] who rarely put his face forward, which didn’t help with the financial doubts.

“And then – can I say this? – there were too many people coming from Inter. Now the club has made a good turn and finally there’s clarity.

“Leonardo, meanwhile, is capable of a lot of things. He’s a man of the world and of communication.

“When he was a Coach [Tassotti was his assistant] he was in his first experience and it was little more than a tentative step, I’m not sure he really wanted to do that.

“He was more enamoured with managing the players and mental preparation than tactics, he preferred to delegate that to his staff.

“In fact, I don’t think he had clear ideas on what to do until a few months ago!”
