The shot-stopper was on loan from Arsenal last term and had returned to England, but the clubs negotiated to extend that stay by another year with option to buy.

“I am grateful to the club for wanting me here again,” Szczesny told Sky Sport Italia.

“When I arrived, Morgan De Sanctis was helping me to settle in, but now the roles have been reversed and I am doing that for Alisson.

“I will try to help him, but in truth he’s already an excellent goalkeeper now.”

The Poland international is confident Luciano Spalletti’s men will challenge for silverware.

“I think the Scudetto will be a battle between Roma and Juventus. The Giallorossi are stronger than last season, as we picked up a leader like Thomas Vermaelen.

“I already worked with him at Arsenal, so realise he doesn’t just have a lot of quality, but is also a commanding figure in defence.”
