The Dutch midfielder has long been a target for new manager Louis van Gaal thanks to their time together in the Dutch national team.

Today the Mirror on Sunday claims Roma told Manchester United that if they want to sign the 24-year-old he’s going to cost €75m (around £60m).

The Red Devils already spent £150m over the summer and Roma value Strootman at the same fee as Angel Di Maria.

The Mirror insists Strootman “has his heart set” on a move to Old Trafford and even sacked agent Chiel Dekker in favour of Robin van Persie’s representative Kes Vos.

Strootman underwent knee surgery last season and won’t be back in action until at least late October.

The Dutch international midfielder had been heavily linked with Manchester United last summer when he opted to join Roma instead, even though the club was not in Europe.

The Giallorossi are now in the Champions League and won their opening fixture 5-1 against CSKA Moscow this week.
