Kevin Strootman admits Roma “are different to Napoli and Juventus, who aren’t forced to sell” their best players.

The Giallorossi have seen talents such as Mohamed Salah, Leandro Paredes, Antonio Rudiger, Miralem Pjanic and Medhi Benatia depart in recent years.

“Roma aren’t a club who only buy players. Every now and then they have to sell, which is different to Napoli and Juventus, who aren’t forced to sell,” Strootman told Sky Sport Italia.

“We have lost Salah, Rudiger and Paredes, before them Pjanic and Benatia. I have a lot of faith in the project that (President James) Pallotta and (director of sport) Monchi are building, but it is different to the other teams in Italy.”

The Dutchman is well aware that he too could be on the way out if the price is right, especially as he has a €45m release clause in his contract.

“You never know in football. I am happy here and Roma supported me after the injury, so I’d like to win something, but this season we’ve only got the Champions League left as a target and that would be incredibly difficult.

“Napoli and Juve are stronger than us, but we are fighting for third place. We’d take fourth too, as we need to get into the Champions League.”
