Undersecretary for Culture Vittorio Sgarbi insists the Stadio Meazza in Milan can’t be demolished: ‘We’ll never authorize it, we won’t do this error.’

Inter and Milan have approved a plan to build a new stadium in the area of San Siro in 2027, but the latest update includes the demolition of the Stadio Meazza to make the project more environmentally sustainable.

“The Meazza won’t be touched, it’s not Sgarbi saying it, but the law,” the new Undersecretary for Culture told ANSA.

“It would be like demolishing the EUR in Rome; it’s naturally bound, it can’t be demolished after 70 years.”

However, the Region of Lombardy ruled two years ago that the Stadio Meazza, also known as San Siro, for its location, does not have cultural interest, so the law Sgarbi is talking about is technically not applicable to Inter and Milan’s stadium.

“If we need a bound, I’ll do it. Anyway, they will need authorization from the Minister to demolish the stadium and they will never have it,” he added.

Former Milan President Silvio Berlusconi agrees that the Stadio Meazza should not be taken down.

“It must be protected. It represents the history of Milan and Italian football. To demolish it would mean to destroy a monument and an identifying symbol of Italy,” he said.

On paper, Inter and Milan’s new stadium won’t be built precisely in the same area as the Stadio Meazza, but just a few meters away from it.

The other option is to pick a different area, building the clubs’ new home in the city of Sesto San Giovanni, just outside Milano.

A public debate involving the residents of the area of San Siro is currently taking place, but construction works won’t begin before 2027 as the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics will be held at the Stadio Meazza.

  1. This is what I love about Italy. The preservation of culture and history. Not like England where we demolish everything. Some of old Wembley could have been in the design of new.

  2. Then look towards the downfall of the league investors want to take the clubs to Huge levels of for the cunts at the top level to put hurdles inbetween

  3. They need to demolish the old reics in charge and get them out of the way.. Tbey are the problem , they are stifling the league

  4. Wow what a surprise!! What a sad, state of affairs our stadiums have become!

In typical fat cat beurecratical, red type, ancient minded, non-progressive fashion, our stadiums will forever languish behind the rest of Europe’s Super powers!

  5. Agreed. The history of Italian football is much more important than it’s future.

We’ll be able to look back fondly 30 years from now at the historic Stadio Meazza which once housed the now defunct AC Milan and Inter Clubs.

  6. Another useless clown, he probably thinks the toilet where he works and the public restrooms are part of history and culture.

  7. The Milan teams should move the location now. Let the Milan council spend the maintenance. The politics will never change. It is time to move forward in Italy. Build a museum to Calcio history there next to a new stadium. If not find a new location. Same in Rome, and Naples.
