Spezia have announced that Poland international Bartlomiej Dragowski’s horrific injury somehow managed to avoid bone fractures, but he is still out of the World Cup.

The shot-stopper rushed off his line during the 2-1 win away to Verona on Sunday and his right foot was caught under him.

It was immediately apparent how bad the injury was, reducing some of his teammates to tears.

A fracture seemed inevitable, yet today’s statement from Spezia insists the tests “ruled out bone fractures and showed a dislocation of the right ankle.”

The leg has been immobilised and more tests can only be performed after the situation has stabilised.

It will nonetheless be impossible for Dragowski to recover in time to participate in the World Cup in Qatar, having initially been named in the Poland squad along with Wojciech Szczesny of Juventus and Bologna’s Lukasz Skorupski.

The 25-year-old has two senior caps for Poland and spent most of his career in Italy.

He joined Fiorentina in 2016, had a loan spell at Empoli and was sold to Spezia in 2022.

Spezia also publicly thanked the Hellas Verona medical staff and the Verona local hospital for helping them deal with the Dragowski situation quickly at the Stadio Bentegodi.
