The Giallorossi were furious because the officials in the VAR booth did not alert referee Gianluca Rocchi to Danilo D’Ambrosio’s trip on Nicolò Zaniolo and 30 seconds later Keita Balde Diao broke the deadlock.

“We were told that if there is a 50-50 situation, it should be viewed. But then people complain there are too many incidents and then it drags the game on too much,” Spalletti told Sky Sport Italia.

“Now everyone waits for the mark of certainty during the match situation. I thought Rocchi made a lot of good decisions, including the one to send me off, as I over-reacted on the touchline. It was an enticing counter-attack, he interrupted it and I lost my temper. It’s fair.

“Roma were really tough and I felt if we’d passed it around more than just put crosses in, we might’ve done better. It was a very entertaining match for all watching and I think a valuable point for both teams, because it shows we are on the right track, what we need to improve on and must work with.”

Mauro Icardi was on target again, but Spalletti was still not entirely content with his performance.

“Icardi is truly a hitman. It becomes difficult to ask him for anything else, because when it counts, he’s there to finish these chances. At times he should be closer to the rest of the team and help hold up the ball, but on the other hand, he is so lethal because that’s how he plays.

“Icardi has this great confidence and even arrogance in front of goal. Those are his characteristics, he scores goals and brings home points. I think he’d do even more if he came deeper and combined with the midfielders, but I think he is working hard to improve that area of his game. It goes a long way back, his style of play.”
