Luciano Spalletti insists Roma “are on the right track”, despite the defeat to Fiorentina.

The Giallorossi went down 1-0 in Florence over the weekend, and will be looking to get back on track at home to Crotone tomorrow.

“We didn’t do very well in the last match but I saw some important signals,” Spalletti assured in his pre-match Press conference.

“In my post-match team talk in Florence I started by saying we were on the right track and we must continue this way.

“We need to be better in possession and show more conviction. I saw positive things in the last match, and if we do a bit more of that we’ll get our Roma back.

“We have to focus on the quality of our possession, we have to control the game so that we can make a difference, particularly the attacking players.

“We have to get the ball from our goalkeeper less and take more territory in the attacking third of the pitch so that’s what we’ve been working on, but I want to see some major improvements.

“We need to control the game, because if we do that we can give that little bit more help to our attacking players, we can give them more confidence and make them more relaxed.

“The first step is the collective. With our behaviour we can change our lives and our results, it’s not that one person can do that.

“[Stephan] El Shaarawy is a winger who has technical quality, as well as pace and explosiveness.

“I think he can do well on the left or the right wing, even if he prefers the left.”

Gerson arrived from Fluminense for €15m, but has so far yet to play in Serie A, and he was hooked at half-time against Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League.

“He has the quality, after that we have to see if he can quickly adapt to a team like ours. He has to be given the opportunity to gain entry.

“He has attacking qualities, but you can’t put him with his back to goal because he’s not very quick. He has to improve his endurance and the defensive side of his game.

“When he played in Plzen he didn’t do badly, but the team didn’t work at its best and I preferred to make a change. He needs a bit of time.”

The Coach was also asked about the condition of Thomas Vermaelen, as well as Francesco Totti’s chances of starting.

“Vermaelen won’t be called,” Spalletti confirmed.

“His condition is improving in view of the Torino game though. Totti could play from the start, as he could in any match.

“I’ll make my choices as I always do.”
